Training Requirements

You must take an in-person pistol course with an NRA, USCCA or DCJS certified instructor, an approved in-person hunter’s safety course also satisfies the training requirements for permits as well. Current and former members of the military are exempt from training but still must know the laws surrounding use of force along with where you can and can not carry a firearm.

Application process

Residents will apply with their local county clerk course house and Non-residents will apply directly to the state police headquarters in Richmond, additionally non-resident applications require fingerprints to be submitted in order to be considered complete.
