How do you obtain a DC CCW?

Do I need a reason to apply?

As a result of Wren vs District of Columbia and Grace vs District of Columbia you are no longer required to submit “reasonable cause” to apply for a concealed carry permit. Prior to these court rulings you would either need to have a cash business, an active threat against your life (with documented proof / police report) or an active stalker to show extreme circumstances requiring the need to concealed carry in the District. In short the want to carry a firearm for self-defense is enough.

What about Non-residents?

The District of Columbia issues non-resident permits provided you have completed a 16 hour course with an MPD certified instructor and 2 hours of range time unless you meet a training exemption (former / current military) in which case you would still be required to take a course on DC specific laws surrounding use of force (this is no exemption for this).

Is there anything else?

You need to be fingerprinted by the Metropolitan Police Department civilian fingerprinting division, this can be done by appointment only. You must also register any firearm you plan to carry in the District of Columbia with MPD, this can be done when you submit your concealed carry application by submitting a PD-219 form. DC concealed carry permits also require proof of completing a renewal class with an MPD certified instructor every 1.5 years along with the renewal application.
